WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is committed to fostering a values-driven community where we serve one another, and where campus serves as a model of the world we want to create: AND
WHEREAS the Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees adopted a Resolution Concerning Expectations Regarding Safety, Violence, Intimidation, Abuse and Discrimination at Colorado Mesa University on March 30, 2017; and
WHEREAS the Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees adopted a Resolution Concerning Free Speech, Expression and Academic Inquiry on August 14, 2020; and
WHEREAS striking the appropriate balance between protecting free speech and protecting the physical safety of the entire campus community can only be achieved with thoughtful leadership of key individuals and partners across campus; AND
WHEREAS on March 27, 2025, the Colorado Mesa University campus was put to the test on balancing the protection of free speech with managing organized protests and heightened public and media attention; AND
WHEREAS student leaders Leilani Domingo, Alex Austin, James Garcia, Myles Newble and Isenia Fregoso fearlessly embodied CMU’s values by rallying the entire campus community to affirmatively use their voices and collective action on March 27, 2025, to organize and host the CMU Unity Fest with hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members; AND
WHEREAS CMU Student Life Director Trey Downey, CMU Assistant Director of Student Life Isabel Manzanarez, and CMU Manager of Operations of Student Life Gabriel Simon demonstrated patient, thoughtful and exceptional leadership in navigating the complexities surrounding the March 27, 2025, activities; AND
WHEREAS CMU Campus Safety Director Alex Zappe demonstrated calm and thoughtful leadership while bringing considerable professional experience to bear on the events of March 27, 2025; AND
WHEREAS the exceptional environment created on campus during the March 27, 2025, Unity Fest was made possible by the exceptional professionalism, courage, humility and leadership demonstrated by the entire Grand Junction Police Department and the personal involvement of Chief Matt Smith.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students, do hereby express our deepest gratitude to each of the aforementioned campus leaders for their exceptional work and example in personifying the CMU values of Love, Dignity, Courage, Humility, Resilience, Curiosity and Power on March 27, 2025.
